Early Family Days

Hi there and happy birthday!

I couldn’t think of anything else to add to your website today, except this.

You remember well the second car that the family had – the ’65 Mustang – right? Well, this one is the first family car, and your mother and I bought this before you were born and even before your sister was born! It was a 1958 Chevrolet Yeoman 2 door station wagon. It had the 283 cubic inch V8 with the bottom-of-the-line 2-barrel carb. It also had an automatic transmission – not our choice, but we needed something to move our belongings to Chicago, and this was best we could find on short notice (early 1962, I think). It was used, and the transmission and the engine both ate fluid/oil at the rate of about 1 quart for every two gasoline stops! I used to drive with cases or ATF and motor oil in the back of the car. I have to say, we got our money’s worth – it lasted for a number of miles (probably 25-30 thousand) and was still running when we bought the Mustang. But it was starting to rust out, as I remember. The pic below is close to the real thing, but the lower color was a light apple green instead of the light blue in the pic, and we had standard hub caps on steel wheels.
